Music From Cloud 9

2004
This song--a lullaby--I wrote when living in NYC, one rainy Saturday afternoon while playing on a dinky spinet that was woefully out of tune. However, the piano's timbre gave the chord progression and odd, music-box quality. The resulting song evinced a childlike quality, one which I sought to evoke in the lyrics. I dedicated the song to my childhood friend, Billy Flanagan who passed on at 17 (to whom PianoForte 1 is dedicated).
It's raining out today
the children sing and play
a song or two, a simple tune
It's raining out today...
From those stormy clouds
it sometimes rhymes
its' sometimes loud
the music from cloud nine

Can't give my love away
I'll have to spend the day
just listening to the phonograph
perhaps some other day...
Beginnings and doors
colors and chords
they sometimes rhyme
the music from cloud nine.

And when Billy would say
can Raf come outside and play
I used to dream
and plan and scheme
and sometimes make the team
Beginnings and doors
colors and chords
they sometimes rhyme
the music from cloud nine
